San Giovanni sits on top of the mountain behind Arco, and it is one of the classic tours of our area.
We start passing through a network of bicycle lanes and country roads that lead north towards Varignano.
Here we start the paved uphill road that will take us to our goal. We will pass Padaro and Mandrea. Don’t be too scared by the first ramps: the road soon unfolds like a snake with a constant slope but do keep in mind that it is anyway a 1000 metres climb requiring a certain effort.
The reward for such an ascent is a stop at Malga San Giovanni: a wonderful lunch is in store for us, before continuing towards Gorghi.
We now find a flat stretch surrounded by fields before starting the descent towards San Pietro mountain hut on a road that is part on cement, part on asphalt and part on dirt. At San Pietro we briefly stop for the stunning view, ending our trip with the descent to Riva del Garda.
