Mount Stivo, with its 2000 metres, dominates the valley to the east of Arco. We will get to it starting from the hamlet of San Martino, taking uphill through olive trees and passing by a very famous cliff known by rock climbers as Policromuro.
The paved road climbs steeply, and each hairpin bend shows us just how much altitude we have gained. All this with the waters of Lake Garda always in sight.
We now enter a magnificent chestnut tree wood with centuries old monumental trees, which in Autumn show off a famous display of brown tones.
After the plain of Troiana we leave the asphalt road, transition into a concrete road and finally find a very comfortable dirt road.
In Carobbi we leave the last signs of mankind’s presence in the shape of old rural houses and enter the woods.
Still ascending we then reverse our course and take south, heading towards the Due Sassi Pass; as soon as we start turning around the giant Mount Stivo the view is unparalleled: the Brenta Group, Mount Paganella, the Sarca Valley with its lakes… everything including Lake Garda’s most southern tip.
We now take the ups and downs of the forest guards’ road to the top of Mount Velo.
At this point we will start our descent using dirt roads in the woods.
